Overview

I built this because the official FIFA site makes it hard to answer two simple questions: what's happening now, and what's coming up. The information is spread over a dozen pages. This is the dashboard I wanted: one place for live and upcoming matches, team and player stats and group standings. Since I was already pulling the historical data, it also carries a model that predicts how the rest of the tournament plays out.

How the predictions work

  1. Team ratings. A Poisson attack and defence rating is fitted for every national team with scikit-learn, on 964 World Cup matches from 1930 to 2022. Teams with little or no history are calibrated against their FIFA ranking points, and a home-advantage term is learned from each match's actual host nation.
  2. Pre-tournament simulation. The ratings seed a Monte Carlo simulation of the whole bracket, run 50,000 times.
  3. Live data. Once the tournament starts, the app pulls scores, penalty shootouts, the real knockout bracket, squads and player stats from FIFA's public API, revalidated every five minutes.
  4. Conditioning on reality. Everything already decided on the pitch is treated as fixed. Only the unplayed matches are re-simulated, so the odds reflect what has actually happened.

What's on screen

  • Matches in one place. Every fixture, live score and result.
  • Live analytics. Scoring intensity, goals, match status and a "team of the day" drawn from current form.
  • Team and player pages. Squads, live 2026 stats, historical form and FIFA rankings.
  • Qualification simulator. Win, draw and loss probabilities for every upcoming fixture.
  • Interactive bracket. Play out one ending of the tournament yourself, in the browser, on the same simulation engine the server uses.
  • Rankings and history. Power ratings, past tournaments and a full match archive.
  • Methodology page. The model explained in plain English, inside the app.

Built as an app

The site ships a web manifest and icons, so it installs to a phone's home screen and opens full-screen. Pages are statically fast and never more than a few minutes stale.
